Bat Babies And Weddings = Love

On Thursday I subbed for a kindergarten class and they were preparing for their career day that was taking place yesterday. Each of them needed to discuss what they wanted to be when they grew up ... and then on Friday, they were going to dress up as that occupation and come to class. They were also going to hear 5 different adults talk about their jobs.
Boy! I was super excited to hear what kindergarteners wanted to be when they grow up! We had a doctor, a cop, a ballerina, a soccer player, and a teacher. The rest was an array of very interesting answers. One kid is growing up to be Santa Claus. Another is growing up to the Easter Bunny ... We had one boy who is going to be Batman and the girl who was sitting next to him decided she is going to be Batgirl. They then proceeded to tell us that they were going to live in a cave and have Bat Babies. Another kid chimed in and said he was going to grow up and be Robin ... One girl was going to be Barbie ... Another is going to be a Barbie Teacher, whatever that means  ... We had an Evil Queen ... And a slew of Princesses.
As crazy as this all seems, I say go for Gold and reach for the stars ... Because in today's world you can be anything you want to be ... Especially a future Princess, which was proven yesterday in the exquisite Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Kate looked gorgeous as she walked down the aisle and Prince William was completely adorable as he whispered to her and her father as they all stood at the alter. He looked completely enamored with her. It was truly the cutest thing I have seen in a long time ... especially at 6 am.
What I love about this story is that it is so like a fairy tale! In that she didn't grow up thinking she would be marrying a Prince! ... Who does? Usually Princesses! ... And I'm not saying that because "she is a commoner" like people are saying ... Because, come on people! Her family are millionaires! In England, commoner just means "not royal" ... She is far from common. She frequented the most elite parties in the country and probably bumped into royalty every now and then before even meeting William ... But still, as a little girl before her family made those millions, she probably had the same Disney dreams little girls all over the world have ... And hers came true.

So, in honor of Kate, I am still holding out for my Prince Charming ... and hey, I am going back to England this summer so who knows maybe I'll even snag a real Prince ... I mean Prince Harry is still single, right? And, despite my intentions last summer ... I apparently didn't scour the country well enough to find him and make him fall desperately in love with me. Oh well ... There's always this summer.

Someday my prince will come.  Someday we'll meet again and away to his castle we'll go - to be happy forever I know. Someday when Spring is here, we'll find our love anew and the birds will sing and wedding bells will ring - someday when my dreams come true. (Someday My Prince Will Come, Disney's "Snow White")

PS. If I had the choice to choose what I wanted to be when I grow up ... I'd choose Cinderella.

Suck It, Trump.

President Obama released his original birth certificate today in response to rising doubts that he is a natural-born citizen ... One of the eligibility requirements for the US presidency.
One of the main skeptics of Obama's birth place has been possible Republican presidential candidate (OMG GOP!) Donald Trump and today he is "very proud" and "honored" to have played a role in putting this controversy to rest.

Seriously dude. If you want to focus on more "important" things then do you really need to worry about  whether or not the certificate is real? I am pretty sure the President of the US would not be stupid enough to release a fake document. If he has kept it hidden for the past two years, he would have kept it hidden ... not released a fake one that could easily be detected ... So I say ...

SUCK IT ... And go back to running your bad reality shows ... and quit trying to run our country.

Born down in a dead man's town. The first kick I took was when I hit the ground. You end up like a dog that's been beat too much 'til you spend half your life just covering it up. Born in the USA. I was born in the USA. I was born in the USA. Born in the USA. (Born in the USA, Bruce Springsteen)

Grad School VS. Glee. Yo. FML.

This is my life.

I have been locked in ABP writing a paper since 4:00 ... And "Glee" starts in approximately 1 minute ... And I don't even care that it's GAGA-filled because ...

I just learned that Darren Criss will be singing "Somewhere Only We Know" by Keane because Kurt is leaving the Dalton Academy for McKinley ... And that is one of the best songs known to man.

Yo. FML.

I'm getting old and I need something to rely on ... (Somewhere Only We Know, Keane)

PS. I have a feeling I will cry while Darren sings this ... I also have a feeling that if anyone gives away anything from this episode, I will go ballistic!

On A Scale of One to JBeibz, How Happy Did The Easter Bunny Make You?

Easter marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ for Christians all around the world ... This teenager is extremely excited about it ... Maybe she's singing hymns or something.

Oh wait ... Never mind ... She just got Justin Bieber tickets in an Easter egg ... I guess God loves her a whole lot, especially because they're front row tickets and "he might be able to see [her] and ... it's the best day of [her] life ... NO NO, the day he falls in love with [her] is gonna be the best day of [her] life."

Happy Easter!

****

In all seriousness though, Happy Easter to those celebrating. Enjoy your day. And here's the song that this blog reminded me of ...

There's never a question in your message, never a moment without your presence. There's never a doubt in my mind that I'll wake up to find your Glory defined and I will finally bow at your feet. I will lift up your name in honor and praise. When I cross over Jordan, I know that I'll be running home to you. (Glory Defined, Building 429)

Rutgersfest 2011 Shooting Victim Video!

"Niggas Is Letting LOOSE! ...
I got some world-star footage, baby!"

Best quotes of this video:

"Niggas is letting loose."

"God, yo."

"That shit was like a nine." ... "Forty-five!" ... "That was something light." ... "That wasn't that loud." ... "Forty-five is way louder."

"I don't wanna get in trouble. Yo, let me get behind you."

"He's done fo' life. It's like ova."

"This nigga just got shot at Rutgersfest."

"He got shot in the ass?" ... "Nah, he got shot in the side." ... "Well, at least he's all right."

****

Yeah, tell me these guys are Rutgers students ... Did they receive all their gun knowledge at Rutgers?
PA-LEEZE!

All I wanna do is just pop pop pop and a-ka-ching and take your money ... No one on the corner has
swagga like us. Hit me on my burner, prepaid wireless. We pack and deliver like UPS trucks, already
going to Hell, just pumping that gas. (Paper Planes - M.I.A.)

My Father (or Mother, or Parents, or Grandparents, or Two Moms, or Two Dads, or Legal Guardians, or Myself, or the State of NJ) Sent Me to Old Rutgers And Resolv'd That I Should Be A Man (Or A Woman, or Undecided) And So I Settled Down In That Noisy College Town On The Banks Of The Old Raritan (Or I Decided To Commute Or Live Off-Campus)

Sounds Awesome, Right?

Just what I want to sing every time I come back to my Alma Mater for an event ... Or every time I just feel like singing it to show my pride in my Alma Mater.
Don't get me wrong. I understand the importance of inclusion but OUR Alma Mater has been in existence for the past 138 years ... Doesn't tradition mean anything anymore? Haven't we had enough of our traditions swept away just in the past five years? I mean I started here six years ago and I've seen colleges dissembled, college-specific traditions forgotten, and hell, I'll say it Rutgersfest (a tradition for the past 30 years - previously called Deinerfest) cancelled - not that that is an important part of our historical tradition but still.
Now, administration wants to change out Alma Mater too! This is too much. Stand up (or sit down, I guess), take this survey, and tell the administration that even though as a school, we are aware of our differences and we accept them, love them, and hold them dear ... We also would like to keep some of the traditions that make our school special and hold them close to us also.

Click here to take the survey ... Tell the administration how YOU feel.

In a quaint old Jersey town that I've learned to call my own stands a college that has long been known to fame; Where the hardy ivy clings to the walls to the ancient stone EVER CHANGING YET ETERNALLY THE SAME! Alma Mater, Alma Mater, plucky college by the gentle Raritan. You're the apple of my eye, brightest star in all the sky, Rutgers College by the gentle Raritan. (In A Quaint Old Jersey Town - Rutgers Glee Club)

PS. To hear all the traditional Rutgers songs, click here. And to purchase the Glee Club's CD The Bells Must Ring!, click here and use the paper mail-in order form. Everyone should have these songs on their iPod, or whatever other newfangled device they use to listen to music ... Because who knows when all these songs will be gone due to changes in the administration.

Rutgers News: Tyler Clementi's Roommate Charged

      This just in ...

Tyler Clementi (left), Dharun Ravi (right)

Dharun Ravi, the roommate of Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers student who killed himself seven months ago after a sexual encounter with another man was recorded and distributed amongst others via the internet by Ravi, was indicted yesterday on both bias and privacy crimes.
He is charged with 15 different counts including privacy and bias charges.
According to CNN, he is also charged with bias intimidation, tampering with physical evidence, and hindering apprehension or prosecution.
In September, Ravi initially tweeted that he "turned on my webcam. saw [Clementi] making out with a dude. Yay" then changed the original tweet to throw off the investigation.
According the The New York Times, the arraignment will be in the coming days, but no date has been set.
According to a CNN broadcast because there are multiple counts of invasion of privacy, a judge can mount the charges one after the other and Ravi can see more than ten years in prison, as opposed to the maximum of ten years that is being reported.
Molly Wei, who lived in the same dorm as Ravi, was also charged with invasion of privacy but was not indicted.

****

This has been a long time coming. I believe the Rutgers community has been waiting to see where this would end. When the arraignment comes, some will believe justice has been served. Others will think not enough has been done ... But one thing is for certain, I have never seen the Rutgers community come together like it did back in September. People put aside their differences and showed the world, we are not about Snooki or Rutgersfest 2011 or whatever else gets thrown at us ...

We are Rutgers and We are One.

For with her motto high, Rutgers name shall never die, On the Banks of the Old Raritan. (On The Banks of the Old Raritan, This version is some dude named Rick Mumma)

Happy Anniversary ... To My Men.

And on the 20th day of April ... the Lord created the Backstreet Boys ... and all was good in the world.

18 years ago today, these 5 guys came together and the squeals of screaming girls (and guys) have been filling stadiums since ...

I went to my first Backstreet Boys concert in the seventh grade ... saw them again after I graduated college ... and I'm seeing them again on June 12 with New Kids On The Block ... and I will continue to see them until the day they stop touring ... or they break up (although I choose to believe that will never happen).

Celebrate the remaining 15 minutes of this glorious day by reliving the memories of one song from each of their amazing CD's.

"Get Down (You're The One For Me)" - Backstreet Boys (1996)

"Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" - Backstreet's Back (1997)

"Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" - Millennium (1999)

"The Call" - Black & Blue (2000)

"Incomplete" - Never Gone (2005)

"Inconsolable" - Unbreakable (2007)

"Straight Through My Heart" - This Is Us (2009)

BONUS: "Don't Turn Out The Lights" - Featuring New Kids On The Block (2011)

Egypt Could Have Used This Girl On Their Side

Don't try and gyp this little girl ... She'll kick your ass for what equates to about 17 cents.

Damn. She's fiesty.

Side note: Some kid actually said that about me when I was substituting because I wouldn't let his class cheat on an exam and I made it known ... I still laugh about it.

All the women who independent, throw your hands up at me. All the honeys who make your money, throw your hands up at me. All the mamas who profit dollas, throw your hands up at me. All the ladies who truly feel me, throw your hands up at me. (Independent Women Part I, Destiny's Child)

Calvin and Hobbes Go To War ... And Learn A Lesson

Calvin and Hobbes has been my favorite cartoon for as long as I can remember ... It not only entertains with its silliness and the funny relationship between the characters ... But it also boils down the most complicated of issues to the simplest of terms. Here's a perfect example ...

So, if you want some laughs and some profound thought ... Get to reading!

War! HUH, yeah. What is good for? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ... War, it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker. War, friend only to the undertaker. (War, Edwin Starr)

Move, Move, Shake, Shake, ... Now Get Out Of New Brunswick

Sooooo ... Rutgersfest 2011! Throw yo' hands up (if you survived!).

I have attended, and lived to talk about, 6 Rutgersfests ... and anyone who was in the vicinity of New Brunswick yesterday into early this morning can tell you that New Brunswick done gone lost it's mind yesterday!!!! I woke up to this ...

Crime ALERT!

After receiving the same thing in text form where they added, "Shooter at large. Avoid College Ave." (or something to that effect). Then received another later in the day saying that another two shootings occurred ... Great publicity for Rutgers, right? And they probably weren't even Rutgers students. God Bless the person who handles Rutgers PR ... because they had their hands full this year.
Rutgersfest in the past has had its problems ... But, really, it's generally been pretty calm and relaxed. You had your drunks and ho-hos ... You had your occasional fight break out ... But nothing like the what I saw yesterday. In the past, it was all fun and games ... Like this guy, he seems like fun.

But yesterday, we had this ... I apologize, in advance, for the use of language in all these videos.

     And this ...

OH, and I'm sure the whole country has seen this mess ...

And I can bet that My-Little-Pony-Hair and Ms. Crayola don't even go to Rutgers ... and that was the major issue yesterday ... Well one of them. Here is the list of reasons why Rutgerfest 2011 turned into ApeShit 2011.

Top Five Why Rutgersfest 2011 Went Insane ...

5) Blame it on the a-a-a-a-alcohollll ... Yep. Rutgerfest means drinking. And, even though it happens every year, and it goes by generally in a smooth, no shots-in-the-ass fashion ... We can probably say that a couple of the fights that broke out were alcohol induced. Just a guess. So, in the future, know yo' limits! I mean didn't this campaign teach you anything?

Rutgersfest Responsible Drinking Campaign, Photo c/o http://www.facebook.com/rufest.responsible.drinking

4) Too many underage kids (and by that I mean high schoolers) ... Rutgerfest should be just that ... A festival of Rutgers students and its alumni. Not a bunch of teeny-boppers and their boyfriends trying to get into parties, not knowing where they're going, throwing up on the side of the road, and taking up space. Not only does it make me feel older (I literally, LITERALLY, ran into a kid I substitute for), but it also makes me uncomfortable. While I was waiting the hour-and-a-half to get a bus back to College Ave., a kid asked me where a bus was going so I asked where his friends and him were trying to get ... His answer was "Where all the parties are at" ... I just made a snide comment and walked away at that point. Sixteen year olds do not need to be trying, and possibly achieving, to get into parties with twenty-two year olds. Sooo ... Next year, do us a favor and stay home and do your homework.

3) Too many out-of-towners ... Yes, I know Pitbull is your fave rapper ... and you want to hear 3oH3! sing "StarStrukk" just one more time ... So do me a favor, stay home ... go on your computer ... and buy a ticket to their next show because Rutgers really doesn't need their population tripling in size because every person within a hundred mile radius decides to flood to our school (that happens every September with enrollment anyway). Easton Ave's traffic looked like Pakistan's traffic last night. Throw in a couple of camels and a few rickshaws and you'd be golden.

Pakistan Trip, 2006-2007 (Camel on the highway)

2) Spring Fever ... The weather has people out their mind ... At least it has me going nuts. One day it's 90 degrees, the next it's 30 degrees. Yesterday it was a solid 50 all day long, plus it was windy, and girls were half-dressed and that just made them mad. And everyone else was just thinking about how they wish Spring would get here and stay. Help us out Mother Nature. Give us a break. Seriously.

1) Plain 'ole stupidity ... People just went and left their thinking caps at home. I don't know what happened ... Even I had some issues. Over porta-potties, no less. You don't know how serious that is. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW. A chick will kick your ass when she has to pee. The first girl who cut the line, I reported to the officer nearby. The next one who did, I just pushed her out of the way so she wanted to fight ... but I just walked into the stall and peed. When I came out and she started screaming in my face and stuff and throwing her hands in my face ... But I was smart enough to walk away from the fight, people. Think about doing that next time ... so no one ends up with a bullet in the butt.

So, there you go ... My top 5 reasons why Rutgersfest 2011 went Ape Shit. Hopefully next year, Rutgers continues the tradition and does not take this year as a reason to end what has been a Rutgers staple for years. Despite all the craziness, I am happy I went because I still had a good time ... even if this might be my last Rutgersfest because I think I said "I'm too old for this" one too many times yesterday.

My Girlies with Drum Dude, Drum Dude's Friend, and Jibbz

But all I wanna know is where the party at. But all I wanna know is where the party at. Let's have a party. Let's have a party. But all I wanna know is where the party at. Everybody, let's have a party. But all I wanna know is where the party at ...  (Let's Have A Party - Backstreet Boys)

Life Is Not An Emergency

Last Thursday night the MCIS Graduate Student Association hosted a talk with Tim Pernetti, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Rutgers University.
Although Pernetti's talk made a slew of amazing points, his talk focused on the importance of communication and the building of relationships throughout one's career and one's life in general.
Pernetti also mentioned something that really struck me. In a moment of somewhat craziness at a point in his earlier life, his wife sent him a text saying, "Life is not an emergency." Pernetti said he saved that text in that phone for as long as he kept it, and tried to look at it everyday (even though he wasn't sure what she meant by it).
Even if Pernetti wasn't sure what his wife meant by it ... I know what I can take away from it ... So get ready for a longggg entry!

I have been acting as if I need to have everything figured out right now. I came out of college hoping for a career in journalism ... But it was the year of the ultimate suckage. 2009. My fellow graduates and I grew up thinking we would leave with all the opportunity in the world that our amazing institution offered us then the world threw us a major curve ball. I applied for hundreds of jobs. Got tons of rejection letters. Got three interviews. One offer but then life threw me another major curve ball in the form of illness (but that's a whole different story). Long story short, a year went by without any luck. I ended up working at NJ Books in New Brunswick.
After a while, I decided I would go back to for graduate school - something I had always considered but didn't know where or when. I applied to several programs and got accepted to four programs. In the end it came down to Rutgers and Villanova. I visited Villanova and although I liked it, and the program looked really great ... I didn't have it in my heart to leave the place that offered me so many opportunities, and gave me so many memories, and helped cultivate relationships that will last a lifetime ... So I went with Rutgers.

Last semester, after taking some classes on Communication and thinking about my past experiences at Rutgers as an undergraduate, I have realized where my passions lie and what I want to really do with my life. Although journalism is still a love of mine, as is writing (hence this blog), I realized that I love working with students. I started substitute teaching, and although I love being in the classroom, I really love working with college students. I did it all through my undergraduate years and want to do it continuously ...
But now people are telling me I picked the wrong Master's program. They are telling me I should have mastered in Student Affairs, and maybe they have a point. But, on the other hand, I looked into a couple of those programs ... and looked into those classes, and I honestly didn't think it was worth it ... "Introduction to Working With Students" ... Done. "Student Leadership" ... Done. "Psychology of Learning." ... Done. (I was a Psych minor!) ... Seriously! Who needs a piece of paper they worked a year-and-a-half, two years for telling them they have the ability to work with students when I have four years experience doing it?!
I worked with the Off-Campus Students' Association for three and a half years, two of those as their treasurer and community service representative and one as their vice-president. I spent that time mentoring off-campus and commuter students and planning events for them and I enjoyed every minute of it. I met some of my best friends through that organization. I saw couples meet and marry through that organization. It was one of the best experiences I had in college. I also was involved with New Student Orientation. I served as an Orientation Leader for a year and as an Orientation Team Leader for another year. That had to be the one of the best things I ever did at Rutgers. I was able to meet amazing people, but also realized that working with new students was one of the most rewarding experiences and one of the most fun experiences ever. I loved planning the orientation and enacting the plans afterward. I loved helping the students and parents understand the workings of this large institution and telling them why I loved it. In a way it was like marketing. As an Orientation Team Leader, I loved leading my team of OL's and helping them help the new students. That was just as rewarding.

Off-Campus Students' Association Annual Halloween Party, 2007
In addition to those two amazing programs, I also got involved with Greek Life on campus. I met an amazing woman in one of my classes junior year who asked me to come out to a recruitment event at Alpha Chi Omega. I got a bid that night (went through formal recruitment) decided AXO was the place for me, and the rest is history! I am still an active alumni and I love going back to help the chapter and mentor the younger girls there. I want to see the chapter be the best it can be and grow to their best potential.

Alpha Chi Omega, Dance Marathon 2010
Those were not the only activities I was involved with as an undergrad. I also wrote for The Daily Targum and was a member of Circle K International, and Rutgers Big Buddy. I loved visiting my Little Buddy, Jose, at the elementary school.
I think it's clear that I have a firm foundation working with students and even though people are consistently telling me I am in the wrong program ... and telling me that I should stick with journalism ... And even though I have applied for dozens of jobs at Rutgers and have failed miserably at several interviews (I have a phobia of those things!) ... and have gotten a couple of rejection letters ... and have gotten a dozen people ignore my resume ... and have people tell me I am too overqualified for some jobs ... and have some people tell me I am too under-qualified for other jobs ... I realized that "Life is not an emergency."
And, one day, I don't know how ... But I will get a job working in this field. I may have to start out small. Maybe at a community college. Maybe sweeping floors at Rutgers (I'm apparently overqualified ... But shouldn't I decide that?!) But one day, I will make it. Maybe not now. Maybe not tomorrow or next week or next year. But one day ... I will work in this field with students because that's what I want to do and that's what I am passionate about and that's what my heart is set on. But right now ... I'm just going to slow down and take it easy and worry about making it to the end of the semester and worry about tomorrow when it gets here. Because that just makes like a whole lot easier.

"Wake up in the morning, get to living my life, making sure that I'm all that I can be ... So now I'm slowing it down and I'm looking around and I'm lovin' this town and I'm doing all right, Ain't worried about nothin' except for the man I wanna be ..." (Roll With Me - Montgomery Gentry)

Didn't Your Mother Tell You Your Face Could Get Stuck Like That?

Don't get me wrong, I think graduate was the right decision for me ... And I am (for the most part) enjoying my classes ... But the weather is getting nicer (crossing my fingers) and vacation is so close soooo ...
If my graduate classes do not end soon, and I need to continue writing papers that turn my brain to mush while I could be outside in the sunshine, and the classes continue to bore me to death ... I may end up like this girl.

No, seriously, one more yawn and that's it ... It's lolli-sticks for me. And they better have lolli-POPS attached to them if they plan on keeping me sitting there with them shoved in my mouth.

MMMMM ... Sweetness.

My boy Lollipop, you make heart go giddy-up. You are as sweet as candy. You're my sugar dandy. (My Boy Lollipop - Millie Small)

Mini Governor Makes Me Smile ...

Jesse Koczon, this adorable kid is just "too small" to be the Governor of New Jersey ... and makes it known to his parents.

But after Jesse became a YouTube sensation and Governor Chris Christie (or one of his people) discovered the video, he tweeted on March 31... "Don't worry Jesse, people gave plenty of reasons why I couldn't be Governor, though being too small wasn't one of them" ... and finally did something everyone could agree was right ...
He signed a proclamation making Jesse Governor for a day and his brother Brandon Lieutenant Governor for a day ...

I must admit that Christie had a great sense of humor during the whole thing (the extended scene is about 15 minutes and honestly, the kids are kind of annoying) but it's a different story for the parents. They look physically agitated the whole time and numerous times looked like the wanted to scold the kids ... I mean, come on, what do you expect when you take a 5- and 4-year-old and throw them in front of a crowd and have them answer questions and make them "in charge." They are clearly going to go a little nuts ... So calm down and let them have a little fun ... And let them say what they want to say ... even if it means them embarrassing you a little. They are kids ... So seriously, chill out.

Here's the extended vid, if you're interested:

Beggin' To Smell Like Bacon

What is the world's (ahem ... guy's?) obsession with bacon? I don't get it (and not just because I am forbidden from eating it) but because it is a meat - not a flavoring, or a scent, or a design.
People do just about everything with bacon. Cook with it, use it as air freshener, and flavor everything from coffee to ice cream and chocolate. You don't see people using lamb chop or chicken as a scent, so what's so special about bacon!?
And, now to add to this bacon frenzy ... a Chicago cologne company is releasing a unisex scent entitled Bacōn (pronounced bay-cone ... Super fancyyy, right?) infused with various scents but apparently has an undertone of bacon hidden in it. There are two scents - Bacōn Gold and Bacōn Classic, both unisex.

Are you kidding me!?!?

Just what I want! ... To walk around smelling like a breakfast meat! I seriously do not understand this bacon trend! A spritz of this cologne "Scent by the God's" (OH YEAH, that's their slogan!) and everything is good in the world ... at least according to their advertisements.

I can just imagine walking down the street and having dogs chase me ... as the scent of bay-cone trails behind me ...

It's a scent that apparently was discovered accidentally in 1920 by a Parisian butcher named John Fargginay who found a formula of 11 essential oils (and bacon) that elevated his customers moods! Then in 1924, his shop burned down and the formula was lost ... UNTIL NOW!!! (Yeah, read the story here).
Whatever ... It's weird but if you want to spend $36 to smell like a roasted pig, click here and enjoy.

Have you seen the little piggies crawling in the dirt? And for all the little piggies life is getting worse - always having dirt to crawl around in ... (Little Piggies - The Beatles)
